SPECS Foundation & Philippine Christian Foundation jointly celebrates World Sight Day with SPED Children of Itaas Elementary School, Muntinlupa City
Oct. 09. 2014
A welcomed visit by the staff and SPED students from Itaas Elem. School, National Bilibid Prison Reservation (NBP) Muntinlupa City, Philippines during the World Sight Day Mission.
Over 100 patients mostly students with special needs from Muntinlupa City arrived via Philippine National Railway train ride to have their eyes checked. They were accompanied by their teachers and caregivers, who were likewise given free eye examination.
The day went extra special as children flock the clinic full of curiosity about the EYE TRAIN and how it could give them hope for better eye sight and care for their well-being. Optometrist Dr. Joy Eustaquio along with the other optometrist and staff of SPECS prepared for the big day by assigning areas where different procedure should be done such as registration, record-filing, examination, frame selection and follow up scheduling, the day went smoothly and as expected, happy faces were seen.
At this point SPECS has reached its milestone of more than a year of providing eye care examination for more than 8,800 patients and promoting the value of healthy eye sight to the community in most depressed areas near its location. It has reached patients as far south and up north, thanks to the convenient train transportation of PNR.
The day ended with a surprise gift from the Philippine Christian Foundation Inc. a non government organization that helps support the poor Filipino youth get education. PCF beneficiary students have been given free eye care examination by SPECS. Afterward the mission, PCF representatives presented a certificate recognition to SPECS President Nica Roma as a way of expressing their gratitude to the help given to them. She coincidentally celebrated her birthday on the same day.
“Hindi namin ini-expect yung ganitong klaseng pag alala at pasasalamat sa SPECS… ang totoo, nung nagstart kami akala naming kaunti lang ang makakaalam kasi maliit lang ang grupo naming, pero yung mga ganito na maraming nagpapasalamat, mula sa mga tao at mga grupo, nagpapasalamat kami ng marami sa mga sumusuporta. Nakakagaan ng kalooban,” SPECS President Andronica Roma shared.
“We didn’t expect this kind of expression of gratitude towards the works of SPECS, truth is, when we started, we thought we will reach only a few because our team is just small, but then people from different walks of life and organization rendered donations and support as well, that is why we are very much grateful and thankful to all, this gives us a very happy feeling” SPECS President Andronica Roma shared.
Since its soft opening in June 2013 (and even before the soft opening), there were many individuals and groups reaching out to SPECS to provide their share especially from the optometrists and people from Canada through SPECS co-founder Dr. Pasqualino Marcantonio, and the Canadian Vision Care through Dr. Allan Jones, who has given enormous support considering that they are non-Filipinos, foreigners with good hearts extending so much care for our fellow Filipino citizens especially the indigents, less fortunate children and elderly.
The SPECS family is very much grateful for your love and trust to our fellow countrymen through your support since day one up to now.
